About Us

About Us: Our Activities, Officers & History

Weekly Workshops: Year round on Tuesday mornings, members meet at the Walton Community Center between 8:00am and 12 noon. Members exchange ideas on carving techniques, receive assistance or instruction, work on individual projects, use our library resources, or spend time observing and socializing.

Seminars: Many two and three day seminars are offered to club members from September through April.  Sessions are designed to teach skill levels from beginner to professional. Seminars are limited to 10-12 carvers to ensure quality instruction with lots of individual attention. The instructors range from nationally-known carvers to club members. A nominal fee covers the cost of materials. Sessions focus on the use of different knives and chisels, as well as power carving using high-speed, motorized tools.

Seminars have included carving wood spirits, songbirds, animals, caricatures, walking canes, decoys, relief carving, wood burning, and more. As a member, if you wish to see a special seminar, just ask!

Annual Wood Carvers Show: Since 1984, the club has sponsored the largest woodcarving show on Florida's East Coast, which welcomes an array of talent from national and world-champion carvers to artists entering their first show.  Woodcarving vendors of all kinds and the raffle prizes donated by club members are two more big reasons not to miss the show.

Our Officers:
Dedicated officers attend to the nuts-and-bolts of running the group and, together with member volunteers, arrange a variety of workshops, shows, community outreach and social gatherings that the group enjoys.

Our History: When the Treasure Coast Woodcarvers Club was started on June 14, 1983, by twelve people they met at Port St. Lucie Bowling Lanes for two months. Then, Dick Bothfeld arranged for the group to meet at Spanish Lakes Golf Village. The club quickly grew too big and, needing more space, decided to rent a room at IRCC Community Center. Meetings were held there on the second Wednesday of each month, except July and August. Membership grew to 66 people, pushing the group to rent double space at the the Community Center. Dues were $10 annually. Shows were held at the Marina Community Center on Prima Vista Blvd, The Polish American Club on Prima Vista Blvd, and the PSL Community Center Exhibition Center on Airoso Blvd., also Martin County Library and Orange Blossom Mall, in Fort Pierce. From February 28, 1993 thru Feb. 26, 1995 the show was held at Club Med Sandpiper Convention Center Exhibit Hall. Grady Warren acquired the Log Cabin at Frances Langford Park in Stuart. They meet each Wednesday after 12PM. For the years 2005 through 2007 our show was held at the Port St. Lucie Community Center on Arioso Blvd. in PSL. and the attendance grew each year. In 2008, 2009 our show was held at the Frances Langford Community Center. Attendence has been great. We are now one of the biggest woodcarving shows on Florida's east coast. Some of the members who have acted as the Show Chairman are Grady Warren, Ed Jettinghoff, Leon Banister, Joe Nolan, Russ Cox, Don Millenbruch. In 2004 due to three hurricanes in one month our library was flooded; we lost most of our books. Since that time we have re-purchased new books and placed the books in three metal cabinets to prevent any further destruction of our very extensive library. Some noted people who have given carving classes are: Chris Howard-Indian Faces, Cheryl Dow - Wood Burning, Smith - Fire Wood Burning, Dunkle - Bishop Dudes, Paul Doherty - Birds, Painting lessons.

The Walton Community Center is located on Harris Street and Ridge Ave, in Port St Lucie (map). Len Allman made arrangements to use the Center in October 1996. We also hold all of our carving classes there. Meetings are held each Tuesday from 8:00AM to 12 Noon.  Business Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month, except June, July and August.
